The Olympics is a sight of champions, joy, and a world coming together. The beginning of the modern Olympics was when people just started to love and appreciate these amazing games. The winter Olympics is another great time and many people like to watch speed skating. Many people love the Olympics because how it started in the modern world and how it grew into one of the biggest sporting events, and because people love to watch their favorite games. First, the history of the modern Olympics is where it all began. For example, they started in 1896; in Athens, Greece. The games that were played back then are relatively the same as they are now because they had all the greats like cycling, gymnastics, swimming, wrestling, and much more. The reason everyone has loved these games is because they all require a different skill (Rosenberg). Later, they were reinstated because a man named Pier wanted people to be healthier and noticed all the kids he knew loved sports. This is a good idea because now kids have something to work for (Rosenberg). In addition, the most well known Olympian that played in 1896, was Spyridon Louis Athens. He wanted to win the relay event more than anything and he won it with more than ten thousand people screaming his name. This was the first great sight of the Olympics (Spink). Also, they only gave medals to first and second place . First place won a silver medal, crown of olive branches, and a certificate of first place. Second place got a bronze medal, crown of laurel, and a certificate of second place. The awards were almost the same as they are today except there are no gold medals and today there are no crowns (Spink). The Olympics grew so large that now they have added the winter Olympic Games. Finally, many people have come to like the winter game speed skating. For example, the speed skating star Apollo Ohno is one of the best speed skaters in the world. After the 2010 Olympics he gained seven medals making him the most decorated athlete in the winter Olympics (Benet).Next, the U.S. has many records in speed skating. Shani Davis has the record for the thousand and fifteen thousand meter race (Olympics.org). In addition, Netherlands is a very tough competitor. They have the most records in the event (Olympics.org). The speed skating event is one of the most well known events in the winter Olympics. In conclusion, the Olympics are the best place to see cultures come together and compete. Almost everyone desires to become an Olympian because how it became a huge international event, and because how people like to watch their preference of the events. In all, the Olympics stand for three things; excellence, respect, and friendship.
